Along with the taps, tiles are the material that most defines the character of a bathroom. It is not just a question of colour: texture, sheen and the way each piece catches the light completely change how a small cloakroom or a spa-style bathroom feels.
Before choosing, at Sa Dutxeta we always ask ourselves the same four questions. Here they are, in case you are thinking of renovating your bathroom in Mallorca.
1. How does light enter the bathroom?
This is the starting point. A matt, porous tile works very well in bright spaces, because it softens reflections and brings a warm, natural feel. An internal bathroom, on the other hand, with no window or little light, benefits from surfaces with a little more sheen to bounce the light that is available.
Colour follows the same logic: light, sand and ivory tones make the space feel larger, while deep tones need more square metres and more light so they do not feel heavy.
2. Which format suits the space?
Large-format tiles reduce grout lines and bring visual calm, especially when the same tile runs across floor and walls. In return, they require very level walls and floors. Small tiles let you play with relief, laying patterns and handmade textures that give the whole a more Mediterranean character.
In the Ses Nines project, for example, Keope Moov Ivory tiles run across floors and walls like a continuous skin, and in the girls’ bathroom a floral wall tile adds the note of colour.
3. How does it feel to the touch?
In a bathroom we walk barefoot, so touch matters as much as looks. On the floor, and especially in the shower area, it is best to choose non-slip tiles. On walls and feature areas there is more freedom for textures, relief and glazed finishes.
That is why we always try the physical sample before specifying it. A photo does not convey the feel, or how the tile changes in the morning or evening light, something you can only appreciate in person.
4. How does it work with the rest of the bathroom?
Tiles are never chosen on their own. They have to work with the taps, the vanity unit and the lighting. A calm base, like the one in the Pinar project, lets the wood of the vanity and the warm tones of the taps take centre stage without the whole feeling overdone.
